Bouldering at the V6 level

January 21st, 2009 by Derek

It’s been about a week and a half since I’ve updated everyone on my climbing “life” and that’s largely because I hadn’t been to the gym in almost a week and the prior two sessions I just wasn’t feeling it.

I wanted to get into the gym this weekend, but ended up being a couch potato. My Xbox 360 had been out for repairs during the entire holiday season, and I got it back right about the time of my last post. Feeling obligated to make up for an entire month’s worth of gaming (not really), I ended up buying a copy of Fable II and played that for about 16 hours this weekend (oops). Glad I got that out of my system.

My brother finished up the last session of his FF1 course tonight (now if I can only get him to POST about it  *hint hint*), so I got to the gym about 8:30 to do some climbing. Sportrock has started switching up routes, leaving lots of new problems for everyone to work on. About a third of the bouldering section has been changed, and the route setters have put up some great new problems.

Towards the end of our climbing session we started messing around on a pink V6 that pretty much stradled the arête using ugly, slopey holds. My first attempt got me one hold from the end, when my hips came a bit too far from the wall and peeled me right off. Managed to send the problem on my second attempt though, which even I was quite surprised at. I was skeptical if it truly was a V6, but the other guy I was climbing with wasn’t able to finish it up and he is climbing in about the same range as me, if not slightly better (I do have the height advantage).

So while I’m not truly bouldering at the V6 level (at least, not consistently), I was very excited to have completed my first V6 problem at the gym.

I really need to bring a camera with me and take photos of these routes – I think it would help my readers make A LOT more sense of what on earth I am talking about half the time.
